FLEECE is entering a new era – one that’s deeper, sharper, and more grounded in truth. After taking a step back from the noise of touring and social media, the Montreal-based band returned in May 2025 with So Much Better Now, a dreamy, introspective song that has signaled a shift to stillness. Produced by Gus Van Go (Metric, The Beaches, Arkells), the song reflects the exhaustion of always putting yourself out there, the strange detachment of living in the public eye, and the chaos of trying to keep up with an ever-changing music industry.
Their next single, Chequebook (out June 18th), sees FLEECE come back swinging. A biting, electric, tongue-in-cheek anthem, Chequebook trades introspection for a sharper edge. It skewers unchecked privilege, calls out systemic rot, and swaps politeness for raw, unfiltered honesty. “It feels really good to get loud and call out unchecked greed,” says guitarist Megan Ennenberg, who takes over lead vocals on the track. “The kind of greed of people in power who are hot for hoarding wealth while so many go without. It’s angry, sassy, and meant to throw a punch at the illusion that success should come at the expense of others. It shouldn’t.”
Since forming in Montreal in the mid-2010s, FLEECE has built a reputation for emotionally rich songwriting, genre-fluid arrangements, and communal live shows that oscillate between catharsis and connection. From their breakout album Stunning & Atrocious (2021) to the tight, self-aware songwriting of Chequebook, the band has never stayed in one lane for long, always chasing what feels honest and never what feels expected. That same curiosity has now led them somewhere new. Still rooted in their signature blend of dreamy textures and heartfelt lyrics, FLEECE is making music as a way of understanding themselves and the world around them. It’s less about spectacle and more about connection, about sharing who they are and what they think through the songs.
Made up of Matthew Ryan Rogers (vocals, keys, bass), Megan Ennenberg (vocals, guitar), Jameson Daniel (guitar), and Ethan Soil (drums), FLEECE thrives on friendship, creative trust, and a willingness to grow out loud. This new chapter isn’t about spectacle, it’s about shedding illusion and letting the truth speak, whether it whispers or screams.
